The 401 is small economy amplifier. There is a single volume control and a tremolo intensity control (no speed control). There is no power transformer, the 117VAC is rectified for B+ and the filaments are directly powered by the 117VAC supply.

Uncommon to period guitar amplifiers, the 401 uses an input transformer between the guitar and the first gain stage.

The early amps had gold control panels, but this was changed to black in 1965. In 1966, the 401 became the 402.
